Chalkboard love

Recently, I have been aware of all the chalkboards and chalkboard related crafts printables etc. and I couldn't help but be inspired.

When I first stumbled upon the start of this chalkboard fad was a little less than a year ago when I was planning my daughter's 2nd birthday party. As I was searching the web for inspiration for theme and decoration ideas I found huge chalkboards for sale on Etsy. On these boards were information about the birthday girls, I only saw examples of little girls but I'm sure you could easily place an order for a little boy. It went from anywhere like how tall they were, how old they were going to be, down to favorite toys, movies, colors and favorite food. It was an excellent way to creatively display to your guests what your child was like and their interests. Not to forget, take a pictures every year and you have creative and cute way for you to remember those memories.

I loved everything about those chalkboards but the price was out of my budget at that time. With everything else I was getting for the party I didn't have much else to spare when it came to more decorations. After staring at the super cute, colorful boards, I figured I could just do it myself.

My chalkboard was a faction of the size and had a super cute wooden frame. You can pick up a wooden frame at you local craft supplies store in the wood craft section and there they have a number of different designs and sizes to choose from. Then I got chalkboard paint and painted a thick piece of cardboard and with multiple coats it seemed to do the trick. I would probably suggest a thin sheet of wood, but I was on a time crunch and had a lot of other handmade projects to finish so that is why I opted to take the quick and easy way out. For my daughters party I used regular chalk and I found it didn't have the clean polished look I was going for but at the time it sufficed.

So now we are up to speed with my chalkboard. For this project I used chalkboard pens. They have such a better look and feel not to mention you can easily do more fonts with them and they come in a variety of colors which is perfect for updating your board for birthdays and holidays.

Next I found a printable and I literally just wrote what a saw. The same one and several others to choose from here.

An hour or so later this is my finished project and I have to say that I am very pleased.

I wish I would have taken more pictures of the 'during' process but I dropped that ball.  I will however take more informative pictures when i update it for the month of November for a more thanksgiving feel. Also, for a tip, use a light colored piece of regular chalk to make guide lines. You can easily erase them when you are finished with a dry paper towel. No need to worry about your chalk pens they only wash off with moisture.

Enjoy!
