I have an absolutely brilliant two year old daughter named Elicia, or Ellie as we often call her. For a while now, I have been wanting to get her started on a preschool curriculum, taught by myself that would cost me little to no money at all. I am well aware that there are several that have great reputations but they cost money and I do plan on later getting her enrolled in a professional program at a school, but for right now I just prefer to do it myself.
As I put on my preschool teacher hat on this morning I quickly realized that just putting together a legit "lesson plan" was quite difficult. I did, as I often times do, Googled 'preschool curriculums' and got some super cute ideas that I just have to share.
Ellie already can spell so teaching her letters seems a little redundant so in that department it's really just review. Today we focused on the letter A and the colors red and green.
For the first activity I got some foam letters and put them in a container, (the lid of my cupcake carrier) and asked her to find the letter A. This was probably her favorite part of the afternoon because I have never given her the foam letters before and she got a kick out it and did a little happy dance once she found it! Also, because they were new, I let her play with them for about 15 minutes while I cleaned the kitchen. Which was just long enough that I could then introduce the next activity so I could put the foam letters away before the dog got to them!
The next activity I chose was just coloring. I had one page length letter A and another that said "A is for apple." I decided to just draw them myself but if you are looking for more of a professional look or if you are short on time, there are plenty of websites with free printables. My favorite is worksheet fun.com. This website has a ton of different options for numbers, letters, and for coloring. I know that I will use this in the near future.
The last activity I did was sorting by colors. Again, the colors of the day were red and green so while Ellie was in her coloring activity I went around the house and put different red and green items in a bag. I then grabbed a red plate and a green plate and told her that following items in this bag were either red or green and for her to sort them accordingly, well in 2 year old terms (green toys go on the green plate etc.) She really like this one too. I think it was fun for her to reach into the bag and see her toys then sort them correctly.
Overall, today went great. Could I have done more and sang some songs sure, but Ellie had fun in her structured play time and that's all that matters. I will continue to grow my own curriculum in the up coming weeks by adding more developmental crafts and games. I am happy with what was accomplished for today. I am looking forward to having more fun, doing more crafts and seeing her grow.
